Hi There
Hi, I'm Alex! I'm a photographer, ski bum, coffee lover, and now a new twin mom. A lot of my friends are now getting pregnant and I thought I would share a few things that could have helped me along the way. I think first we'll start with my crazy birth story. But first lets start with a disclaimer- being pregnant and then being a mom is super crazy hard and I would never judge/ tell anyone how to parenting. These are just some good tips/advice I was given that actually worked for me and my little guys. You know yourself, your body and baby best but hopefully this helps ease some stress or gives you another thing to try when all else fails!
Birth Story:
We went to the hospital twice in the two weeks leading up to the boys birth, but was sent home and my doctor set the date of 8/17 to be induced if they didn't come on their own. This was 3 weeks before my due date but I was super ready to not be pregnant anymore! So on 8/17 it was a normal day MC went to work, I sat on the couch all day. When he got home we set up our new bed because 2 weeks before we broke our bed frame trying to rearrange our room to accommodate the pack-n-play we would be using instead of a basinet. It seemed super fitting that we would be assembling furniture hours before giving birth... the best reflection of how 'prepared' we were to take care of 2 infants. So we set up the new bed, while fighting about the jelly again perfect reflection of how anxious we both were. Then we shared a buffalo chicken calzone and watched ink master. Mc took my last bump photo, I kissed the dogs, and off we went to the hospital. We parked the car, and we walked in to get this party started. It was really strange and stressful but we got checked in, like we were staying at a hotel or something and then they got us a room and hooked up me to all the monitors.
11:00 check-in at hospital
02:30 started pitosin
07:30 They broke my water (4 cm)- it was so so so much and MC said my stomach shank about 2/3 immediately
11:30 I got the epidural (5 cm) and Sarah got to our room
12:30 MC went for coffee- the doctor came and checked me and I was at 10cm!
13:00 Tried to push for about 20 mins
Took a break for about 2 hours in and out of resting/snoozing/pain. Lots of low back pain.
Pushed for about an hour- somewhere in the middle of these 3 hours I threw up 2/3 times
16:30 We went to the OR- I remember feeling really dizzy and feeling motion sick when they started moving the bed.
16:42 5 mins of pushing in OR and Finnegan was born- they held him up and I thought he's so lanky. Then the doctor asked if MC wanted to cut the cord and then he was gone and my midwife was in my face telling me they were going to do the c-section. I thought 'really? bummer- I don't want that' and 'do we have to?' and just no feeling at all. Then someone above my head asked were my epideral was and I thought 'isn't that your job?- how should I know' then someone was asking where the other parts of the bed I was on were. Then I remember the anesthesia mask.
-> apparently after Finn came out I went back to 6 cm and baby B was laying on his cord- so not getting blood or oxogen. So they did the emergency c-section instead of pulling him out breach when I wasn't fully dilated.
16:54 Sebastian was born and MC got to hold him when they were taking him to the NICU
then I was in and out- I woke up and saw MC holding a baby and asked if everyone was ok and he said yes, so I went back to sleep
19:15 MC named our boys and I woke up really cold from the anesthesia wearing off.
Then saw my mom, my dad and Sherry and they met Finn
19:30 Shannon, Sarah and Kyle got to meet Finn
21:10 we kicked everyone out
21:30 Attempted breast feeding with Finn
22:10 I got to meet Sebastian
23:00 Transferred to our room and settled
We stayed at the hospital for 4 nights and 3 days. We brought our boys home on Sunday 8/20/17 and watched the Solar Eclipse in front of our house.
Birth Story:
-how far along did you find out you were having twins?
At 6 weeks I went in for an ultrasound and we found out it was 2! It was such a crazy day- I was really stressed/anxious about being pregnant. I went to pick up Michael on Base (MC was working for the Air National Guard in New Castle,DE) but there was crazy traffic and I was running late and was lost and crying/screaming on the phone that I couldn't figure out how to get back to the gate with the GPS. So when I was about half hour late for my appointment I gave up trying to get him and went without him. Then I had a breakdown in the waiting room- full on crying panic attack and this really nice lady comforted me. Then we had the ultrasound and the tech turns the screen to me and explains that the embryo was in fact in the 'right' spot (I had an ectopic pregnancy about 10 months prior) and 'as you can see.. its two... do twins run in your family?' I was speechless but answered her.. yes my uncles are twins, then immediately thought my cousin Rachel is going to be pissed (she really wants twins) and then told the tech that Michael was going to flip- because he had predicted it and also missed the ultrasound. Then after a lot of 'OMGs' and 'are you sure?' I got in the car to go to work and called MC. I asked him, are you sitting down? and he's in a room full of all his Air Force Officers and he says... 'is it bad?....is it twins?' and i said 'ya, and its not even a funny joke- I'm so pissed at you!!'

-did your twins stay with you or the nursery at night?
They stayed in our room with us except for the last night the nurse recommended we get one last good night of sleep and they both went to the nursery. That was the last full nights sleep I've had in 6 months.
